How Long Plaster Needs Before Painting
This is the single most common cause of paint failure in a renovated house. Fresh plaster is full of water and highly absorbent, and both of those things have to be dealt with before a full coat of emulsion goes anywhere near it.
Judge by colour, not by calendar
Plaster goes on dark and dries to a uniform pale pink or cream. Until every part of the wall has reached that even colour, moisture is still leaving. Corners, the wall behind a radiator, external walls and the area near the floor dry slowest and are where dark patches persist.
Time ranges quoted online are unhelpful because thickness, ventilation and temperature change everything. A thin skim in a warm ventilated room is ready far sooner than a full float coat in an unheated period house in November.
Dry it properly
Ventilation removes moisture; heat alone just moves it around.
Open windows on both sides where possible to get air moving · Keep gentle background heat rather than blasting a heater at one wall · Do not use unflued gas heaters, which add water to the air · A dehumidifier helps in cold weather when windows cannot stay open · Do not seal the room up and leave it
The mist coat
New plaster is porous and will drink a full-strength emulsion, leaving the paint sitting as a skin with nothing gripping underneath. A mist coat — matt emulsion thinned with water, typically around three parts paint to one part water — soaks in and creates a key.
Use a contract or standard matt emulsion for this. Vinyl silks, one-coat paints and most designer finishes are not suitable as a mist coat because they are formulated to sit on the surface.
Signs you went too early
Paint peeling away in sheets, a chalky white bloom, or patchy sheen differences across the wall all indicate the surface was still wet or was never keyed. The remedy is to remove everything loose, allow the plaster to dry fully, then mist coat and repaint — the same work twice.
Frequently asked questions
Can I speed up plaster drying with a heater?
Gentle background warmth combined with ventilation helps. Direct, intense heat dries the surface ahead of the core, which causes cracking and a deceptive appearance of readiness.
Do I need PVA before painting new plaster?
No. PVA on new plaster creates a sealed layer that emulsion struggles to bond to. A properly thinned mist coat is the correct preparation.
Why is one patch of my wall still dark?
Either it is thicker there, it is a cold spot with little air movement, or moisture is arriving from behind. If it never lightens, the cause is worth investigating before decorating.
Can I wallpaper straight onto new plaster?
It needs to be fully dry and sized first, otherwise the paper bonds too strongly and damages the plaster when it eventually comes off.
