Renovating a 1930s Semi
1930s semis are a distinct renovation type: cavity walls but usually unfilled, generous room proportions but poor flow, and a set of recurring defects that show up house after house. Knowing them in advance makes budgeting far more accurate.
Cavity walls that were never insulated
Most were built with a narrow unfilled cavity. Retrofitting cavity insulation is usually the single most cost-effective thermal improvement available, provided the cavity is clean, the walls are in good condition and the property is not badly exposed to driving rain.
Where a house has already been filled badly, or where the cavity is bridged with debris, penetrating damp on the exposed elevation is a common symptom and needs investigating before more insulation is added.
The bay window
Bays are the coldest part of most 1930s houses: large glazed area, a small flat or tiled roof over, and often minimal insulation in the structure below the window. They are also where condensation and mould appear first.

Layout and the rear of the house
The classic 1930s plan puts a small kitchen at the back with a separate dining room, often with an outrigger or an old outside WC. Most renovations of these houses involve opening the rear up, which usually means a structural beam and building control involvement.
Side-return infill and modest rear extensions transform the ground floor without changing the front elevation, which keeps the house recognisable and avoids the planning friction of front alterations.
Services and finishes
Original or 1960s-era wiring, single-skin outrigger walls, a boiler in an awkward place and old under-floor pipework are all usual finds. Budget for a rewire unless there is documented evidence of a recent one.
Externally, tired pebbledash on the upper storey is near-universal. That decision — clean and coat, overcoat with a thin-coat system, or remove — is worth taking early because it interacts with any scaffold you are already paying for.

In most cases yes, subject to a survey confirming the cavity is clear, the walls are sound and the property is not in a severely exposed location. Existing damp problems should be resolved first.

Usually, because the wall between kitchen and dining room is often load-bearing. A structural engineer specifies the beam and building control inspects the installation.
Why is the bay window always cold?
Large glazed area, a poorly insulated bay roof and floor, and cold bridging where the bay meets the main wall. Insulating the roof and floor of the bay is usually more effective than changing the glazing again.
Should the pebbledash come off?
Only if it is failing or you are insulating externally. If it is sound and the objection is appearance, coating or a thin-coat system over it is far less disruptive.
