Insulating and finishing a garden room so it feels like a room
The difference between a shed with a radiator and a room you want to spend the day in is almost entirely in the layers you cannot see afterwards. Insulation, vapour control and the finish work as one system, and getting the order right matters more than the brand of any product. This guide covers how we build up the inside, including where cork earns its place alongside conventional plaster and paint.
The build up, in order
Working from outside in, a well built wall has cladding, a ventilated cavity, a breather membrane, the structural frame with insulation between and often over it, a vapour control layer on the warm side, then the internal lining and finish.
The floor and roof follow the same logic. Insulation continuous where possible, vapour control on the warm side, no gaps at the junctions.
Where cold bridges hide
Insulation performance is decided at the weak points, not in the middle of the panels.

Vapour control and why it matters
Warm internal air holds moisture. If it reaches a cold surface within the construction it condenses inside the wall, where nobody sees it until timber and boards are damaged.
The vapour control layer on the warm side reduces that, and it only works if it is continuous. Taped joints, sealed penetrations and care around socket boxes are what make it effective rather than decorative.
Cork, plaster or plasterboard
Each has a place, and mixing them within one building is normal.

Getting the decoration right
Small rooms show every defect, because there is nowhere for the eye to rest. Fresh plaster needs a mist coat before proper coats, and rushing that is the usual cause of patchy paint that peels at the edges.
Choose finishes that suit the use. Wipeable finishes make sense in a gym or a bar, matt emulsion suits an office where glare and reflection are unwelcome.
Ventilation completes the job
A well sealed insulated room needs deliberate ventilation, otherwise the moisture you generate stays inside. Trickle ventilation as standard, extract where there is a shower or heavy exercise use.
This is the step people leave out, and it is the reason some very well insulated garden rooms end up with mould in the corners within a year.
