Why insulation is the only part of a garden room you cannot fix later
Cladding can be replaced. Decoration can be redone. Insulation sits inside a sealed structure, and putting it right means taking the building apart. That is why a thin insulation specification is the most expensive saving in this trade, and why it is worth understanding the build up before you choose a supplier. Where the heat actually escapes
In a small building the roof and the floor lose a disproportionate share, because the surface area to volume ratio is nothing like a house. A garden room with excellent walls and a weak roof will still feel cold at head height and warm at the ankles, or the other way round in summer.
Junctions matter as much as the panels. Heat leaks at corners, at the eaves and where the floor meets the wall, because that is where insulation layers get interrupted.
A sound build up, layer by layer
The exact materials vary, but the principle is constant: a continuous insulation layer with no interruptions, a vapour control layer on the warm side, and a ventilated cavity on the cold side so any moisture that gets in can leave.

Cold bridges, in plain terms
Every timber stud is a small heat leak, because timber conducts more readily than insulation. Insulating only between studs leaves a grid of cold lines across the wall, which in a cold snap can show as faint marks on the internal finish where dust settles on cooler surfaces.
Adding a continuous layer over the frame interrupts those lines. It costs more in board and slightly more in labour, and it makes a real difference to how the room feels rather than how it measures on paper.
Airtightness and condensation
Insulation only performs if air is not moving through it. Draughts around door frames, unsealed service penetrations and loose membranes undo a good specification quietly.
The flip side is that a tight, warm building needs a way for moist air to leave, otherwise you get condensation on the coldest surface, usually a window reveal or a corner. Trickle ventilation, or an extract if there is a shower, keeps that under control.

There is no single legal figure for a small outbuilding, so judge it by continuity rather than one number: insulation in floor, walls and roof, a warm roof build up, and a layer over the studs as well as between them.
Can insulation be added to an existing garden room?
Sometimes, by insulating internally and re finishing, though you lose floor area and the floor itself usually stays cold. It is always more disruptive and more expensive than getting it right at build stage.
Why does my garden room get condensation?
Warm moist air is meeting a cold surface, or there is no route for humidity to escape. It usually points to a gap in the insulation, a vapour control layer that is not sealed, or a lack of ventilation.
Does a well insulated garden room still need heating?
Yes, but far less of it. A small heater or a single air conditioning unit with a heating function is normally enough, and the building holds that warmth rather than shedding it within the hour.
Is a log cabin as warm as an insulated garden room?
Generally not. Solid timber walls give some thermal mass but nothing like the performance of an insulated build up, and cabin floors and roofs are usually the weakest points.
