How long will a garden room actually take, start to finish?
People usually ask about the build weeks and forget the fortnight of decisions beforehand and the week of finishing at the end. A straightforward insulated garden room is typically a few weeks on site, but the overall timeline from first phone call to using the room is longer than that, and knowing where the time goes makes it easier to plan around.
Stage by stage
Every project varies with size, ground conditions and specification, but the sequence is consistent.

What actually causes delays
In our experience it is rarely the building work itself.
- Ground conditions worse than expected once the base is dug out
- Lead times on glazing, particularly large sliding doors
- Decisions still open when the trade needs them, especially finishes and socket positions
- Extended wet spells at groundworks stage
- Late changes, such as adding a shower once the base is already poured
How to keep the programme tight
The single most effective thing is finalising the specification before work starts. Choose the doors, agree the internal finish, mark up socket positions and confirm where the cable will run.
The second is clearing access early. A clear route for materials and a place for a skip or spoil pile saves days across a project.
Living with the build
Unlike an extension, you keep your house throughout. The garden takes the hit: expect the working area, a material store and a route to it to be out of use, and expect the lawn near the route to need reinstatement afterwards.
