Family-run, covering the CR8 area

Builders in Purley

For a Purley house, the first decision is where the additional useful room belongs: within the inter-war plan, upstairs or beyond the existing footprint. Conservation settings and the valley’s water questions are part of that choice. Mighty Oak Construction reviews the building with Elliot and prepares a written breakdown after a visit without charge.

Inter-war houses with room to grow

Purley grew rapidly in the 1920s and 1930s, marketed as offering spacious homes in a green environment, and that inter-war stock still defines the area — from the streets around Purley Cross to Woodcote, centred on its village green, and the Webb Estate laid out by William Webb. Around the town centre, census figures show about 31% of homes are detached and 28% semi-detached, with 71% owner-occupied and 35% having four or more bedrooms. These are exactly the houses that take loft conversions, rear extensions and full refurbishments well.

Planning is handled by Croydon Council. The Webb Estate and Upper Woodcote Village are both conservation areas, so extensions and exterior changes there may need consent and sympathetic design, and Metropolitan Green Belt lies within a couple of kilometres of the centre.

The ground matters here too. North-east Purley stretches into the chalk hill spurs of the North Downs, while the culverted River Bourne can flood in the Purley valley and Flood Zones 2 and 3 lie within about two kilometres. Foundations and drainage are assessed properly at the free site visit, before anything is designed or priced.

Investigate the property constraints

Assess access, structural requirements and the planning position before defining each element of the written quotation.

3

Keep the construction connected

Elliot links the household’s decisions to building trades carried out in-house and to the electrical, plumbing and engineering specialists involved.

4
