Builders in Faversham
Terraced homes, listed fabric and tidal land are distinct parts of Faversham’s building context. The useful starting point is the change you want within that particular setting. Mighty Oak Construction discusses additions, internal alterations and garden buildings with Elliot, then documents the commissioned scope following a free visit.
Building in one of Kent's oldest market towns
Faversham's Abbey Street is a medieval timber-framed street often described as the finest in the south-east, and the town has been a working market town beside the Swale for centuries — home to the Shepherd Neame brewery since 1698 and, from 1874 to 1919, the centre of the UK's explosives industry. That history shows in the housing: around 370 listed buildings stand within a couple of kilometres of the centre, and the town, Preston-next-Faversham and Ospringe all have conservation areas.
Around the town centre, census figures show about 40% of homes are terraced and two-thirds are owner-occupied. Planning is handled by Swale Borough Council, and an Article 4 direction in the Faversham conservation area restricts permitted development rights — so external changes such as rendering or new openings can need a full application where they would not elsewhere.
The ground changes across the area too, from marshland in the north to brickearth, gravel and chalk rising towards the Kent Downs in the south, and tidal Flood Zone 3 is mapped along Faversham Creek and the Swale marshes. Foundations, floor levels and drainage are all checked for the actual plot at the free site visit.
Building services across Faversham
Read these services alongside the town’s terraced stock, Article 4 controls and changing ground.
Identify the fabric to retain to completion
Identify the fabric to retain
Use the visit to distinguish the desired change from the older building details that need care, including any listed or conservation status.
Set out consents and construction
Check the relevant approvals and describe the proposed tasks separately in the written offer, so the intended work can be compared properly.
Carry the brief through the trades
In-house building and finishing work is coordinated with specialist installations. Elliot stays available for decisions about the agreed specification.
Reconcile the result with the proposal
Review completed finishes, any required inspection documentation and the tidied site against the scope commissioned at the outset.
